Hey John, every friday my group meets at a diner to drop off our time and do the weekly toolbox safety thing. Last Friday 3 retirees showed up to break bread with us. I recognized two of the guys. Anyway there was 10 of us altogether and a fine time was had by all, those guys are enjoying themselves and keeping busy and generally very happy. That was great to see and I really enjoyed the visit. I hope to one day soon be a visitor instead of a visitee. Bye for now, stay safe, Phil

John retirements great. Almost didnt get my first check. Had ankle surgery to fuse left ankle from job accident 30+ years ago. Ended up with multiple blood clots both lungs. Discharged went home rushed to hosp. in I.C.U. 1 week on rat poison {cumaden} 2 years ago O. K. now. Put more into retirement bennys. John in the E. D. R. B. P. there is no wording on Joint Survivor Benifit if you get divorced or your spouse passes away before you as there is in the J.I.B. summary pension booklet 2007 page 25&26 Husband and wife pop up feature. Was told by E.D.R.P. adminestrator that your monthly pension money dosent revert back to you {if you were to get lets say a $1.000.00 pension and elect the 50% survivor benefit and they take out $200 you then get $800 a month. If what happens above they say that you will not get back the $200. Told them thats my pension money as was negotiated and should revert back to me} There lawyers looking into it. Called Goverment Pension Watch Dog waiting for reply. Need to have language put into pension part for retiries. Work safe.

Wow!
Great to hear you from you. Been a number of years since we worked together.
Glad to see that you made it passed the storm and are doing O.K. God Bless. Thank you for looking out for the brothers as far as the Survivor Benefit. You are a good man and your thoughts are always welcomed. I removed your phone number so you don't get any crank calls. Please keep us up to date.

Hi John,Retirement is great. I retired early to try and save my knees and wait until they come up with a better form of knee replacements. Work had become increasingly demanding with all the safety equipment we had to carry plus all the other bullshit. I hear that it's even worse now,but there are still only 8 hours in a day and I think I would like to have stayed on a little longer but you never know what tomorrow will bring. I figured out my pension, annuities and when my SS would kick in. Also we had planned to sell our big house and get a smaller one someplace with lower taxes and cost of living. If you are planning your retirement and think that you have it all worked out think about what would happened if the unexpected happened. You've heard the term SNAFU (situation normal all f__k'd up.)My father in law passed away and my mother in law wanted us to move to LI and buy a house with her. It didn't work out and my mother in law is very happy now living with my sister in law but that would have totally screwed up everything I had planned. We did try to sell our home but it was quickly depreciating down over $100k and my daughter didn't go off to college so she still lives at home. We couldn't sell at a price to pay off our mortgage so we tried to refinance and couldn't find a loan that would pay off both our mortgages so we will stay here for a few more years and try again if our country is still here. What I am saying is prepare for your future but also have back up plans. Plan for the unexpected. Most of all find a way to be happy with whatever hand your dealt and I wish you a happy retirement.

Amen John,

Wise words from a retired brother and friend. Would love to work until full retirement age but I don't think I can push my body like this for another 10 years. It appears that many companies are primarily concerned about the bottom line $$$$$ and not so much the man's health. With Local 1 in the background continuing to acquire Local 3 companies in order to bring over the men and contracts ( I believe to literally kill the competition thru attrition); mix that in with a faltering, sputtering economy and our poor union reps have their hands tied behind their backs and can only do so much.I feel like an orphan at times and often on my own. The body can only absorb so much punishment before it fails for good once and for all. Union brothers best pace yourselves or you will end up being nothing more than a blotch of black ink on a stat sheet.

God Bless,
John Fellin

Hi John,

Retirement is great and you should take advantage of it as soon as you are able to. The only advice or recommendation is that (as always) money is the main ingrediant. Guys - my advice is you should take advantage of your 401 or any savings plan you are comfortable with and put away as much as possible. Personally for me living in NY was no longer an option as taxes would have cancelled out my EDRBP benefit. Fortunately for me and my wife timing was on our side. My niece purchased my house in Massapequa before the bottom fell out of the housing market. We are now living in North Carolina with taxes that are much more affordable. Sorry to say the elevator business I left was not the same elvator business I started in. To all TKE employees - GOD BLESS YOU!!!!

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for visiting my website.
Great to hear from you. It's been a long while since we last worked together. Thank you for your wisdom over the years. The men should pay careful attention to those who have retired. There's alot to be learned.
Your observations have been prophetic. I have 5 more to go in this prison sentence. I'm getting out early, down sizing and looking for a more affordable place to live. The longer I stay in this business the more likely I will end up being married to a wheel chair.

Hey guys I can't believe I actually found a site for the aiding of elevator mechanics. I have been searching for some form of elevator mechanic forum or community for the longest but couldn't find one. Thank God I did. I recently took the test for the NYC Local 3 Elevator mechanics Apprenticeship by the JATC. I got my letter in the mail this past Saturday and was ecstatic to find out that I HAD PASSED! Man was that test hard lol. And now I'm moving on to the interview and selection process my date is Sept 27 2010 at 10 am and I plan on being there at 9. I just wanted to know if you guys could please give me some advice on what to say or do during the interview that will help my chances. Also I wanted to know if you guys happened to know how long it takes to start work after/if i get accepted? Thanks a bunch guys

Hi John,
Thank you for visiting my website. The fact that you are conducting research shows great enthusiasm. I created this site for the very reasons you mentioned.
This site gives many an opportunity to share thoughts collectively and as the old saying goes " Strength in Numbers"
Congratulations in passing the test. As far as interview advice there are going to be many depending on who you ask. Your skill level will also play part to where you may eventually end up. You can work toward being a maintenance mechanic, repair mechanic, conversion mechanic, escalator mechanic,etc..
Ask your self the following questions?
We will use the auto industry as an example. If you like doing oil changes, wiper replacement, tuneups etc then the maintenance department may be suited for you. If you like replacing trannys, pulling engines then the repair department may be up your alley. If you love full restoration of a vehicle then the modernization department is your answer. Be honest during your interview
and perfectly clear.
God Bless and Good Luck,
John Fellin

I am sad to announce the passing of another brother. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this
very difficult time. Let us all take a moment to reflect how short Life is especially for elevator mechanics.
Take the necessary steps to preserve both body and mind. We do not work
behind a desk seated at a chair all day long. Both body and mind are challenged over and over, day in and day out ,year after year, without a moments rest.Brothers,I implore you, please ,please, please, heed this message. Work smarter not harder. This old Japanese saying carries a lot of weight. Pace yourself at all costs. Anything short of this
goal is simply self abuse. This is not a profound statement. This is the truth.
The truth hurts, The truth awakens, The truth never lies.
May the souls of the faithfully departed through through the mercy of God rest in peace amen.

Rest in Peace, his family has my condolences.

Thanks for the advice John I really want to either be in the repair department or modernization department I've always loved repairing anything that needs repairing and I also love to work at making thing better. I really have no experience in this field but I have great interest, my experience lies as a chef in a lot of restaurants in the city. But I feel like its not something for me anymore. I lost my passion for it. But one thing I still love is working with my hands. Theres just an overwhelming feeling when you accomplish something that you had to work hard for and I feel I can get that as an elevator mechanic. I am also in it just for a better quality of living. Expense wise. 10 an hour just cant cut it anymore and the bills are piling up. Im only 22 years old and im already wracked with stress about paying rent and bills. I just feel like this career will help me in a lot more ways than one.

Hi John,
If you click on any one of my see more videos buttons it will take you to my youtube site where you can pick up a few pointers from over 100 videos.
I hope you like them.
When you are eventually employed you will have to attend a four year apprenticeship program. This will keep you busy. Anybody out there wishing to also help this young man send along your comments and suggestions.

John,
In the Aug.31 message you posted about woking safely you hit the nail right on the head. The people that we had to work under only want to know if the job is finished. They do not care about any problems or the conditions that you are facing in trying to get the job done.If something happens to you they will toss you aside like yesterdays news paper and bitch that you didn't finish the job.The only thing that might surpass their uncaring attitude is the arrogance they have for the customers when they call requesting service or questioning the lack of service they are receiving.

Hi Jeff,
Thank you for those kind words. I had a great time working with you.
Fellas, listen carefully to the wisdom of our retired brethren. Let his words guide us through our daily struggles. Retirement can only be achieved one way.
You got to get there in one piece!

When a company questions your abilities you have the same right to question theirs!

Peace.

Dear Jim,
It is great to to see a retired elevator mechanic pass his time writing about this wonderful field. I do not mind sharing your thoughts with us but I do take offense in using my website as advertisement unless you are willing to share with others as I do.

Hi, recently I have become interested in this field and was wondering if it is a good profession to get into? Also, where would I start with getting an apprenticeship? Any info is greatly appreciated!
Thank-you

Hi Gordon,
This is a good profession for those who enjoy a mentally stimulating job and getting dirty at the same time. Keep your eyes opened for papers like the Chief.
